The 2025–26 men’s college basketball season delivered one of the sport’s most memorable campaigns, highlighted by the return of the Michigan Wolverines and the Big Ten Conference to the top of the college basketball world.

Dusty May’s Wolverines captured the national championship, defeating UConn 69–63 in the title game to secure the program’s first national title since 1989. Michigan finished 37–3 and completed a dominant NCAA Tournament run, winning the school’s second national championship and giving the Big Ten Conference its first national champion since 2000.

Michigan’s championship journey featured impressive victories throughout March and April, including wins over SEC powers Alabama and Tennessee, followed by a dominant Final Four victory over Arizona. All-American Yaxel Lendeborg, Tournament MOP Elliott Cadeau and big men Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara helped lead the Wolverines throughout the season, while Michigan’s depth, defense, and balanced scoring proved to be the difference-maker all season long. The UConn Huskies, along with Arizona and Illinois, completed a powerhouse Final Four field in Indianapolis.

The season was also defined by one of the most talented freshman classes college basketball has ever seen. Duke’s Cameron Boozer emerged as the sport’s biggest star, sweeping virtually every major National Player of the Year award. BYU’s AJ Dybantsa electrified fans with his all-around ability and finished among the nation’s leading scorers, while Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, Arkansas point guard Darius Acuff Jr., and North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson among others, showcased the extraordinary depth of the 2025 recruiting class. Many analysts viewed the group as the strongest freshman class of the modern era, bringing renewed star power to the college game.

Michigan’s long-awaited second championship, the Big Ten’s return to glory, the emergence of a historic freshman class, and a tournament filled with memorable performances combined to make the 2025–26 season one that college basketball fans will remember for years to come.
